Talking about sex with your spouse can be a pretty prickly subject.  Knowing how and when to bring it up, however, can help smooth along the conversation.  Jean Marie Lockwood, from Suite101.com, proposes practical tips to help you know how to bring up it up, and therefore making sex even better.

Use humor. Sex is supposed to be fun, so bringing it up should be approached in the same manner.  If you are too serious when you bring it up, it makes bringing it up an even bigger deal and more awkward than it should be.

Don’t bring it up during sex. Not only will it kill the moment, but you won’t be as willing to be fully open about it for fear of possibly offending your spouse.

Be honest about what you like and don’t like, and would like to try. However, please be gentle and aware of your spouses’ feelings.  Allowing your spouse to express their feelings on the topic as well is the next tip.  Encourage them to share their feelings and be open to their hearing their ideas.

Be willing to try something new. If you don’t like it, bring it up in the next conversation you have about sex.

If one of you is really not comfortable with the new idea, then drop it and find a different one that you are both comfortable with. You still need to respect the other, and not force them to do something they don’t want to do.  That also means not making them feel guilty for not wanting to try it either.

These tips can go a long way to making sex become a regular conversation and not so awkward to bring up.  Just remember to keep respect one another and keep it fun.
