    How are mentor couples selected?

    Couples who are trained as mentor couples are usually selected by a pastor or leader in a church or organization.

     

    What can you offer as a mentor couple?

    • Your own experiences, including strengths, weaknesses, successes, and failures

    • Compassion and understanding

    • Time

    • The modeling of marital skills learned from Marriage Matters training

     

    What will you learn at a mentor couple training?

    • How to share your marriage story

    • How to help couples identify sources of conflict in their marriages

    • How to teach proven marital skills

    • How to encourage couples to use those skills

    • How to help others strengthen their own marriages

     

    What are the qualities of a marriage mentor?

    • Authentic and genuine

    • Good listener

    • Encouraging spirit

    • Non-condemning

    • Trained volunteer with a passion to strengthen marriages

    • Willing to open their hearts and home

     

    What are some things a marriage mentor Is not?

    • A couple with a perfect marriage

    • A replacement for professional counselors or clergy

    • A professional referee or mediator

    • A Mom or Dad

    • “On call” for every crisis

    • A teacher

    • A “buddy”

    • An expert

    • Committed for long-term mentoring

     

    What are the important marriage mentoring skills taught in the training?

    Marriage Matters uses two main tools to help promote healthy communication and conflict resolution:

    • Marital Assessment (FOCCUS Inventory)

    • Speaker/Listener Technique

     

    These tools are used to move couples through the following steps to resolve conflicts in marriages:

    Identify the problem, issue, or opportunities (FOCCUS Inventory).

    Understand the issue (Speaker/Listener Technique).

    Brainstorm solutions.

    Implement the best solution.
