The marital vow, "‘'Til death do us part" took on a new meaning when Marriage Matters® presented the Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre to sold out crowds Valentine's weekend.
Attendance was nearly 300 for both the Friday and Saturday night showing. The wholesome, fun-filled, Valentine’s date-night captured the setting of the elegant “wedding reception” of Roger and Sherry Schefler. Creative humor, political satire, and marriage mentoring were common themes in this well-scripted play. Interactive comedy was plentiful as the play offered several opportunities for audience participation.
The play featured a cast of incredibly talented volunteer actors who bantered throughout the night giving key clues along the way. The Des Moines WHO Radio talk show host Steve Deace was eventually “murdered” during the toss of the garter. His “dead” body was literally carted away as the crowd was left with an absent-minded inspector trying to piece together the investigation.
Participants at each table collaborated to figure out the murderer, the method, and the motive. Some people had taken notes and had written down their ideas. One person wrote they thought Amy, Steve’s wife, committed the murder because she wanted to redecorate the man cave! Eventually the real murderers, method, and motive were revealed. Amy and “Cat” the DJ were the culprits because they wanted Steve out of the way so they could be together. What was their method? Amy kissed Steve with poison lip gloss concocted by Cat (of course Amy was immune to the poison due to a pill taken earlier in the evening)!
At the conclusion of the evening, Dr. Mike Hartwig gave a brief description of the marriage mentoring offered by Marriage Matters and informed all those attending that the primary goal of Marriage Matters is to strengthen families, one marriage at a time.
