Marriages almost seem doomed to fail from the beginning with a high divorce rate of fifty percent in this country. It just goes to show that you don’t just get married and everything falls happily into place. For the couples not included in that statistic, they most likely work at keeping their marriage together, and therefore are still together. In order for couples to take pleasure in their marriage, they have to continually work and put forth the effort to make it enjoyable for both partners. Here are a few simple ways to make your marriage more enjoyable.Stop the negativity. After the honeymoon is over, it is easy to begin nitpicking your spouse. All the little things you once thought were cute now begin to really annoy you. These annoyances tend to affect the way you treat them. This is where you have to make the decision to stop letting these things dictate how you feel about your spouse. Try to focus on the positive things about your spouse, instead everything that drives you crazy.
Make friends with people that have positive attitudes about their spouses. A negative attitude can spread like a forest fire, so it’s best to surround yourself with friends who have an optimistic and appreciative relationship with their husband or wife.
Have zero expectations. Too many unrealistic expectations can cause a lot of disappointment in a marriage. For example, men who expect to come home to a spotless house, dinner waiting, well-behaved children, and the T.V. tuned to Sportscenter are probably in for a rude awakening. To expect this everyday is just way too much to ask of their spouse. By expecting nothing, you become appreciative of what your spouse has done for you.
Have fun together. Sometimes with the hustle and bustle of life, couples forget to stop and spend quality time together or just have a good laugh. Go out and try new activities. Moreover, being able to laugh off some of the stress in life will help a marriage tremendously and can help bring more happiness into the union.
Set goals together. When you have an event to look forward to both spouses usually try to work together in order to achieve it. This creates a common bond and helps your marriage to grow stronger. Try sitting down together and coming up with short term and long term realistic goals to strive for.
Wear a smile even during tough situations. It is hard to be pleasant when all you really want to do is stress, freak out, and push your spouse away. However, giving into those negative emotions is the worst thing to do. Instead try to remain calm, SMILE, and work through the situation together. What’s more is when one spouse is smiling it’s difficult for the other to stay in a bad mood as well.
Spouses that exert the effort to make their marriage more satisfying generally are happier in their marriage overall.
